Broadband 101

Understanding South Carolina’s digital divide.

Broadband is high-speed internet provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in communities throughout South Carolina. People who live within communities with broadband infrastructure can subscribe to internet services by contacting the ISP directly.

Despite ever-growing use of video conferencing, telehealth and remote work, many areas of South Carolina still lack access to reliable, high-speed broadband internet service — access that’s a necessity to successfully using modern technology platforms or virtual-centered experiences. Through GetConnectedSC, the state’s Broadband Office is working to bring reliable, high-speed internet to every South Carolinian.

How does my service compare?

Evaluate the speed and quality of your current internet connection using Ookla Speedtest, a web-based tool that measures your download and upload speeds. Use the tool to test your internet’s reaction time and compare the results to see how your current access stacks up against the most basic level of broadband access — at least 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload speeds. Just click “Go” to start the test.

How can I get broadband?

Requests for service are shared with ISPs that serve in or around your area to illustrate opportunities for broadband access expansions.

If your internet connectivity doesn’t meet the minimum threshold for broadband or you have no access to any internet service, you may request access to broadband internet.
